Chus Guti\u00e9rrez is a film director and screenwriter. She studied at the City College of New York. Upon her arrival to Madrid, she worked as assistant director for Joaqu\u00edn Jord\u00e1 and took part in the music group Xoxonees.<\/p>\n

In 1992, she released \u2018Sublet\u2019, her first feature film, shot in New York with Ic\u00edar Bolla\u00edn and produced by Fernando Trueba PC at the San Sebastian Film Festival. She was granted the Best Opera Prima Award by the Film Writers Circle, the \u201cCaracola de Oro\u201d at the Alcances Film Showcase (Cadiz) and was nominated for the Goya Awards.<\/p>\n

Her next film, \u201cSexo Oral\u201d (1994), is an experiment in which anonymous people talk about their sexuality. Its theatrical release became an event for being one of the first commercially distributed documentaries. It was followed by \u201cAlma gitana\u201d (1995), starring Pedro Alonso and Amara Carmona.<\/p>\n

In 1997, she released the comedy \u201cInsomnio\u201d, produced by Boca a Boca and starring Candela Pe\u00f1a, Ernesto Alterio, Cristina Marcos and Fele Mart\u00ednez. Two years later, she directed the TV series \u201cEllas son as\u00ed\u201d (1999), produced by Telecinco and starring Mar\u00eda Barranco, Maribel Verd\u00fa, Neus Asensi and Mar\u00eda Adanez. That very year she was given the Meridiana Award by the Malaga Women Institute.<\/p>\n

\u201cPoniente\u201d (2001) is a film about immigration in Almeria\u2019s greenhouses. Selected for the Venice and Toronto Festivals, it took part in several showcases all over the world. In 2003, she played a role in the film \u2018Te Doy Mis Ojos\u2019, by Ic\u00edar Bolla\u00edn. The following year she took part in the film \u201cHay motivo\u201d, with the short film \u201cAdolescentes\u201d, in which students criticize their unattended public education system. She also directed the segment \u201cLas siete alcantarillas\u201d (2004) and the group-created documentary \u201cEn el mundo a cada rato\u201d, co directed along with Patricia Ferreira, Pere Joan Ventura, Javier Corcuera and Javier Fesser.<\/p>\n

In 2005, she released \u201cEl calentito\u201d, a film set during Madrid\u2019s \u201cMovida\u201d and starring Ver\u00f3nica S\u00e1nchez, Macarena G\u00f3mez and Ruth D\u00edaz. Produced by Telespan, the film received the Platinum Award for Best Film at the Montecarlo Comedy Film Festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cRetorno a Hansala\u201d (2008), produced by Muac Films and Maestranza Films and starring Jose Luis Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez and Farah Hamed, was given the Jury\u2019s Special Award at the Valladolid Festival. It was selected for the Toronto Festival and won the Golden Pyramid at the Cairo Festival, as well as the International Critics\u2019 Choice Award at Cairo\u2019s Fipresci and the Audience\u2019s Choice Award at the Tanger Festival. It was also nominated for three Goya Awards for Best New Actress, Best Original Song and Best Screenplay, as well as Best Screenplay and Best Direction at the 2009 Guadalajara Film Festival. It has taken part in numerous film festivals and showcases all over the world.<\/p>\n

In 2012 and 2014 she shot \u201cCiudad Delirio\u201d, \u201cDroga Oral\u201d and \u201cSacromonte, Los Sabios de la Tribu\u201d. \u201cCiudad Delirio\u201d was the opening film of the Cartagena Film Festival and also took part at the Montreal and Busan Festival.<\/p>\n

In 2020, she released her last work \u201cRol & Rol\u201d, a documentary about women representation in film and mass media. It was selected for the 2020 Malaga and Seminci festivals.<\/p>\n

She has also had a wide career as an educator by giving lectures at film schools and universities such as Carlos III or Camilo Jos\u00e9 Cela. She\u2019s a founding partner and vicepresident of CIMA between 2006 and 2010.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
