Hugo Stuven began his career in the audiovisual industry working as a production assistant, stage manager, and assistant director in film. He soon made the leap to directing commercials, music videos, and behind-the-scenes content, where he started to develop a distinct visual and narrative style.
In 2014, he made his feature film debut with ANOMALOUS, a haunting psychological thriller shot in English between New York and Barcelona, starring Lluis Homar, Christy Escobar, Edgar Fox, and Adria Arjona. The film was awarded at numerous international festivals in New York, Houston, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, and Spain, establishing Stuven as an emerging voice in auteur cinema.
His second feature film, SOLO (2018), starring Alain Hernández and Aura Garrido, tells a powerful true story of survival. Shot entirely on the island of Fuerteventura, Stuven committed to raw realism by filming in natural locations without green screens or artificial effects. The film had its world premiere at the 21st Málaga Film Festival and, following its theatrical release by FILMAX, gained international exposure through Netflix.
In 2020, he revolutionized the documentary genre with THE CHALLENGE: ETA, the first original documentary series from Amazon Prime Video Spain. A high-impact historical journey both visually and narratively, the series was unanimously praised by critics and audiences alike. It became the first series ever nominated for “Best Documentary of the Year” at the Feroz Awards. Hugo was also nominated for “Best Director” at the Iris Awards.
In 2021, he released SEVE on Prime Video — an intimate and emotional portrait of golf legend Severiano Ballesteros. In 2022, two new projects followed on the same platform: the documentary series REAL MADRID: THE WHITE LEGEND and the feature documentary ÁNGEL NIETO: THE MAN WHO DEFEATED TIME, further solidifying his reputation in the documentary field.
At the end of 2025, Hugo will return to fiction with his third feature film as director and co-writer: EL NIDO, a powerful horror film produced by Filmax.
Also premiering this year is DIME TU NOMBRE, his first horror series as creator, director, and screenwriter (alongside Alejandro Hernández and César de Nicolás). Starring Michelle Jenner, Darío Grandinetti, Elena Rivera, Younes Bouab, and Raúl Arévalo, the series is an Amazon Prime Video Original, produced by Espotlight Media (Los Farad) and Skybound Entertainment (The Walking Dead).
In addition to his audiovisual work, Hugo Stuven has published two novels: EL FARO DE LAS LÁGRIMAS PERDIDAS (The Lighthouse of Lost Tears), a finalist for the prestigious Minotauro Award, and ANOMALOUS, inspired by his debut feature film.
As a pianist and composer, he has released his first album LOOP, available on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music — once again demonstrating his versatility and artistic sensitivity.
