INFORMATION

Belén Macías was born in Tarragona and trained in Madrid, where she earned a degree in Information Sciences from the Complutense University and graduated in Acting from the Royal School of Dramatic Art (RESAD). She later completed her training as a screenwriter at the International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. She began her professional career as a screenwriter on various television programs and series, an experience that would strongly inform her later work as a director, particularly her keen attention to character development and performance. Alongside her audiovisual career, she has maintained an intense theatrical practice, directing key works by major playwrights such as Jean Genet (El balcón), Antón Chéjov (El monje, La boda y El aniversario) and Eugène Ionesco (La cantante calva).

Her career as a television director is extensive and well established, having worked on some of the most significant Spanish fiction series of recent decades. She directed Un lugar en el mundo for Antena 3; La señora, 14 April: The Republic, Víctor Ros and Fugitiva for RTVE; Hospital Central, El don de Alba and Madres. Amor y vida for Mediaset, the latter also for Amazon Prime Video; as well as Pura sangre and El juicio for Amazon LATAM, and UNA. Un nuevo amanecer for Atresplayer. She has also directed several standalone television films, including La Atlántida, El Monstruo del pozo, and Juegos de Familia, as well as the miniseries La Princesa de Ébol​i and Historias Robadas.

In cinema, she made her debut with the short films El puzzle and Mala espina, which received more than seventy national and international awards and multiple nominations, including the Goya Award for Best Short Film. Her first feature film, El patio de mi cárcel, produced by El Deseo and selected for competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, won numerous national and international awards and received four Goya Award nominations, establishing her as one of the strongest voices of her generation. Her second feature, Marsella, produced by Tornasol Media, earned two Goya Award nominations and several accolades. In 2023, she released Verano en rojo, her third feature film, which was met with notable acclaim from both audiences and critics. She is currently writing the screenplay for her fourth feature film.
